Sapphire II - Day 11, 19th Jan, Another Full Day

We started the day with a relaxed, lazy motor sail to the Lemon Cays. The lagoon had some 35 boats at anchor but joining them was no easy task. We basically circled two thirds of the little islands before we found a narrow passage with enough water for us to enter.

The O'Connors and Jerry took off in the RIB to find the reputed excellent reef-snorkeling. Although it was indeed interesting, I don't think we found the best area. Rather than tropical fish what we mostly saw were very large colorful starfish. We had finished swimming and were snacking and taking photographs when 2 Kuna arrived in a dugout canoe. They spoke to us in English and started to display, on a tree trunk, beautiful examples of Molas, the tapestry- like fabrics that are a hallmark of the Kuna culture. The work was so good we decided to ask them back to Sapphire.

For the next hour or so we were enthralled with the many examples Vinancio lovingly showed us. We ended up with everybody on board choosing a piece that they liked.

We left the idyllic Lemon Cays and had a brisk sail at speeds of 8 to 9 kts to Corazon de Jesus where we anchored for the night. We had come back here in order to explore up the Rio Diablo river on Friday 21st.

Sapphire II Vessel Logs - Days 9 & 10, 17 & 18 Jan, A Blur

The last 2 days have flown by. We said farewell to Charlie and welcome to Miriam and Gavin. The air travel arrangements to/from Panama city were a bit of a mystery but worked in the end even though the 0630 flight left at 0800!

The new crew brought good weather with them. The overcast has cleared and we now enjoy paradise under blue skies. We spent Tuesday night in the tiny atolls of Cocos Banderos. Had a great anchorage all to ourselves and enjoyed an afternoon on one of them swimming and exploring.

Next day we took instruction from Jerry on hoisting and dousing the Parasail while Gavin and Miriam took turns driving the boat at 10 kts in 15 kts breeze. We reached the island of Chichime in time for lunch and joined the crews of some 26 boats on shore for some socializing. The World ARC folks had arranged for a Kuna group of musicians/dancers to perform on the beach while other Kuna sold handicrafts and drinks to the appreciative crews. It was great to meet up with the crews from other boats who previously had just been names on radio calls. Also fun for Miriam and Gavin to meet and get to know people we'll be with while going through the canal.

On our way back to Sapphire in the tender, we stopped off at a boat that had reported trouble with their Parasail. Jerry helped sort it out and we were rewarded by the grateful crew with Pastis and pâté.

After what seems like a whirlwind couple of days we were glad to have an early night and then see what tomorrow will bring.

Sapphire II - Day 9, 17 Jan, Farewell Charlie

Sapphire II Vessel Log - Day 8, 16 Jan, Formal Entry

Porvenir is an official entry port to Panama, so in order for Charlie to leave the country, we had to have him (and the rest of us) properly documented entering. That process took Scott some 3 hours, while Jerry fortunately spotted a one hammock bar which sold beers for $1! He and Charlie managed somehow to while away the 3 hours the immigration process took.

The process completed, we set sail for Corazon de Jesus, off the Rio Diablo river, where an airstrip was reputed to be operating. Jerry drove Sapphire in 20 kts close-hauled, making 9 kts all the 18 or so miles.

He playfully tried to get a rise out of Charlie by making numerous attempts to put the lee rail under the water, occasionally succeeding! It was a very enjoyable, exhilarating beat.

We anchored in the company of a number of yachts at dusk. Later, we wanted to find the airstrip so took the tender in the direction of the lights on shore. We didn't find the airport but we did find a bar with $1 beers, and so properly fortified, we set about exploring the town, for that's what it was. It seemed like there might be 500 or so residents, mostly in western garb including kids who wouldn't have been out of place in Harlem. The town had a power station so there was some minimal street lighting. We walked all around looking at the mix of traditional thatched huts and basic concrete structures until we found ourselves back at the bar. We took some refreshment and continued our stroll to the north side of town. All the people we came across were friendly and pleasant and seemed both happy, animated and smart. In addition to electricity (which powers the TVs which can be seen through the reed walls of the huts) the town has piped-in fresh water from the mainland. The streets are flattened sand and the living conditions quite basic. It was a common sight to see families sitting on the sand floor of rooms/houses watching TV while the only other furniture was a hammock!

After our stroll, it was back to the boat and an early night, to be sure to get Charlie to his plane (if we can find the strip?) by 6am tomorrow.

Sapphire II - Vessel Log Day 7, Sunday 15 Jan, Forget All your cares and concerns.

These San Blas islands have a magical quality. They evoke a feeling of happiness at the simple, unspoit beauty of the setting. We spent a leisurely day, visited a couple of the islands in the RIB.

On the second one there was an extended Kuna family; patriarch and matriarch, a number of men and women in their 20s hanging loose in hammocks and perhaps flirting and then a big gaggle of kids from babies on up.. There were a number of thatched huts, in the center of one an open fire was heating a pan of food. The Indians were extremely welcoming. They smiled and laughed happily and some played games with Charlie, who charmed them. We took lots of photos and were never asked for money. Alex was able to translate and so we got a good understanding of their lifestyle. Carefree it is by all appearances.

In the afternoon we upped anchor and motorsailed the 16 miles to Porvenir to check in formally tomorrow. It's a tricky little entrance through the reefs to the anchorage, made a little more daunting by the sight of a yacht on her beam end up on the reef!

After our first sit-down dinner around the saloon table in quite a while, two bottles of a good Red, and Tina Turner on the TV it was early lights out for Sapphire's contented crew!

Sapphire II - Day 6, 14 Jan, San Blas Arrival

The run to the San Blas was uneventful and we arrived at 11:40. Motored in to the anchorage in East Hollandes Cays. After a few celebratory drinks we tendered over to one of the many palm covered mini- islands. The setting of these islands is quite spectacular with the waves breaking over the long protective reef, behind the shelter of which the islands sit in calm water. The whole setting is idyllic and lives up to its promise.

We were greeted on the little island by a Kuna Indian in a dugout canoe who had filled it with coconuts. After giving us a gift of a big bag of bananas he explained the ecology of the islands to Alex. Then we swam and lazed about in the crystal clear waters until it was time to go to Gunvor for drinks. Crews from 4 boats ended up there and a good time was had by all. It was a fitting end to a wonderful day in the islands.

Here is the latest log from Sapphire II - Sapphire II - Day 4, 12 Jan, Land Ho.,

"After a beautiful sailing day of sun, waves and winds in the mid-teens it was exciting, in the late afternoon to see the mountains of Colombia's coastal range emerge from the light haze to our left,just as the sun was setting in a golden glow ahead.

It was fascinating after 4+ days of nothing but endless watery vistas to see lights along a shore line in the dusk.and the cities we passed, Barranquilla and Cartagena have such evocative recall and historical associations with the Spanish empire in the Americas that just to sail close to them was a treat. Visions of Spanish galleons carrying treasures to the homeland sprung to mind.

At about 1400 hrs the wind picked up quite quickly to 30 kts, but just as quickly eased. The lull didn't last though. By 2100 hrs, as we closed Cape Marta, on the northwest coast of Colombia, we were back up to 30+ kts and shortening sail. And by midnight we were seeing 43 kts with triple reefed main. There was more to come........."

Sapphire II - Day 5, Friday 13 th Jsn, Dark & Stormy

Although not signalled by the weather forecasts, the barometer dropped from 1016 mb to 1003 mb in 10 hours, heralding a deep low pressure event. Friday the 13 th then proceeded to justify its scary reputation. From some 40 kts at midnight on the 12 th the wind strengthened to 51 kts at 0100 and gusted 55 kts at 0200 (why do all these events seem to happen in the middle of pitch black nights?). Through the build, we continually shortened sail in good time and the auto helm coped well. The waves were about 18 feet at peak and appeared to tower above the deck as they came roaring from astern. The night was coal black, and only the stern white NAV light showed the magnitude of the walls of water racing down on us. The wind whistled and shrieked in the rigging and Sapphire charged on at speeds around 13 kts.

By 0700 the wind had abated to 40+ kts and it felt like we were becalmed. The ugly seas were still giving us a bashing so that sleep was out of the question. At the height of the storm all four of us were on deck, while Alex hung on in the saloon.
In the light of day we could now see the sea state with very large, curling waves breaking around us, white water everywhere and spray and foam flying off the tops of the rollers. The boat performed impeccably, calmly handling the conditions and evoking complete confidence in her crew.

Some yachts in the fleet did not fare so well. There were reports of Chinese gybes, torn sails, main sheet blocks torn away and a number of auto helm failures. This was a baptism of fire for the fleet and not really what the crews likely expected on the very first leg of a 15 month circumnavigation!

Blog claification - Some of you seem confused

I'm just back from the dock and it seem that you think that Jerry lost his Parasailor. This is not the case.

Jerry's crew were sensible and put the Parasailor to bed as the winds were increasing up to 50 knots.

The boat that did not put the sail away resulting in the explosion is Caterman Yacht Anastasia did not put it away. The sail gave way in reports winds of 35 - 42 knots.

A sail is as good as it's crew.

While Sapphire II decides to put the Parasailor to bed due to increasing winds, Catamaran Boat "Anastasia"... well... here is her ships log...

"11:52.8N 75:16.1W 861 miles covered, 240 miles to go
Up until 5:30 this evening everything was going really well. We were averaging 11 knots and making good progress towards San Blas. The wind was gradually increasing and we were wondering whether it was time to bring the Parasailor down. A 35 knot gust made the decision for us - the Parasailor exploded (A3F)

Then it was everyone onto the trampoline to pull down the tattered shreds of sail.

Anyway, it was fun while it lasted. At times when surfing down waves we saw speeds of over 20 knots registered on the GPS.

Tonight we just have the mainsail with two reefs in it, proceeding at a more sedate 8 knots."

Ships Log - Sapphire II - Day 4, 11 Jan, a Sailing Day

"Sailing conditions were interesting today. The wind was from ENE I the mid- teens all day but there were waves and swells of 10+ feet for most of the day. This is due to the coast line of Venezuela projecting seaward at Lake Maracaibo, which, incidentally has historically been a major oil producing region going back to the 1930s. The other effect of the outflow from the lake is that the sea temperature dropped by 2+ degrees and so the air felt cooler, which was very welcome.

We sailed all day with the Parasailor and set a new speed record for Sapphire of 13.3 kts while surfing down one of the large rollers. Jerry was driving at the time and was delighted with the performance of his sail.....as we're we all.

With winds forecast to build into the 20s overnight, we took down the kite and enjoyed a relaxed evening and for me a good nights sleep under Main and Genoa. We spotted Serendipity on AIS some 12 miles ahead and have been closing ever so slowly. We are no longer pushing the boat because we want to arrive at our destination in daylight. If we arrived at night we would not be able to access an anchorage because of the poorly charted reefs and we have no wish to motor in circles, waiting for the dawn. So, tomorrow should be a nice, relaxing dawdle!"

The lead has just changed hands Serendipity is in first place running at 8.2 knots with 683.7nm to go. Gunvor has been leading the whole time but now runs in second place with good speed at 9.4 knots. Still a long way to go so come on Sapphire, eat your Irish bread and sail faster!

Sapphire II - Day 2, 9 Jan, Parasailing! Vessel log

"Day2 was announced for me by the whine of winches above my headat daybreak as the crew enthusiastically tackled the hoist of the new Parasailor. Up she went without any fuss and flew beautifully. The sail is made by the market leader for paraglider wings and has an airfoil cut into the centre of the large sail. It is performing very well in the lighter airs and of course we are hoping to see some strengthening! Given our "adventure" with the sails predecessor when crossing the Atlantic we have been super diligent at preventing chafe with Kevlar wrapping and moving the sheets from time to time. By evening, we were so comfortable with the sail that we opted to leave it up for the night!

The crew on this leg have been fantastic. Scott, the Kiwi skipper has exerted super-human efforts to ensure the boat was in great condition for the voyage; his partner Alx, from Puerto Rico keeps the below-decks spotless and provides the daily culinary delights; Jerry, from Tampa, FL by way of Cork, Ireland has been sailing competitively all his life (5 Fastnets, amongst other offshore races) and is the US rep for Parasailor. He knows his product! And Charlie, from New Orleans, skippered the first Sapphire, including our first Atlantic in 2009. Although motley, the crew are already truly a team and sail Sapphire to the optimum.

During the day, we decided not to continue on our heading for Jamaica and gybed south! The day also saw us lose what must have been a very big fish. Not only did he break the line, he stripped the gears from the reel as he fought to escape. So, no fish for dinner, but a very nice chicken curry. The evening was a tropical dream, balmy airs, with a warm light washing the sea from a full moon in a star-lit sky."

World Arc Day 1 - Jerry in second place!

The World ARC fleet set off from Saint Lucia at noon today in excellent starting conditions. There was bright sunshine, clear skies and 15-20 knots of wind to start the fleet off on their journey. The 26 yachts out on the water made a great spectacle as the first leg of this circumnavigation event got underway.

The fist yacht across the pin end of the start line was the Canadian flagged X-55, GUNVOR XL owned by Kartsen and Sheila Witt, closely followed by the USA flagged Discovery 67, Sapphire II, owned by John O’Connor, with Jerry Twomey (SailTime Tampa Bay's Regatta & Flotilla expert) and a 3,500 square foot Parasailor and the Jeanneau 57 Piligrim owned by Dmitry Maslov and skippered by Oleg Ivaskin. The remainder of the fleet followed in close succession creating an excellent display.

Sapphire - Vessel Log - A good Day

"After completing formalities in the marina (Immigration and large marina bill), and finishing the chores to make the boat ready to go to sea, we left the dock at 1045. It was a nice breezy day with whitecaps in the bay. Gradually, the fleet of 30 or so boats raised sails and positioned for the 1200 start...

Sapphire was among the first boats across the line and soon there was just one boat ahead as we reached down the coast. We popped our passion red MPS and within 15 mins were leading. An exciting and satisfying start.

We turned west for Panama, put out the fishing line and charged along at up to 12 kts in 25 kts. We favored speed over position and ended up some 20 miles north of the rhumb line, but boy it was fun!

At dusk we took down the big sail and decided safety the first night out was the prudent thing to do. And so, with genoa and main keeping boat speed above 8 kts, and under a gloriously bright full moon, we all enjoyed a tranquil first night at sea."

Sapphire - Boat log - The Final Preparations.

"Saturday afternoon in St Lucia and Sapphire is a hive of activity. Fresh produce and fruit has been delivered and stowed. The RIB has been cleaned and a diver has checked out the underwater bits and indeed found a sheet of plastic firmly covering the sea water intake. The bilges are being flushed out with bleach to be sure they are sweet-smelling. Cabins have sort of been tidied up, but it still seems there are many items still to be checked off the list.

The fourth crew member, Charlie Marts, is on his way from the airport and I'm about to go check passports with the ARC office.

We'll not lack for things to get done over the next 3 or 4 hours so I'll go and get on with it.

Start tomorrow,Sunday, is at 1200 and the weather promises to make the passage to the San Blas islands a fast one. 18- 25 kts from the ENE and with our new Parasailor sail and Jerry the expert on board we should have a romp!"

SailTime Tampa Bay @ the St Petersburg Boat Show this weekend - December 1st - 4th 2011

We are excited to announce a selection of our fleet will be at the St Petersburg Boat Show this weekend. Thursday December 1st - Sunday December 4th 2011.

The SailTime Tampa Bay Team with be in the in-water section of the show. Look out for the orange carpet and our Famous Tiki Bar and be sure to say hi to Marty.

In addition, some of our members will be helping at the show either doing demo sails and you can ride along with them. In addition, members will be on the stand to give you their full "behind the scenes" experiences of how SailTime Tampa Bay works for them.

We have a full range of sailing options for you to choose. Ask us about our boat show specials as well as our no long-term commitment programs.
